Entry guidance: Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, or equivalent, including English Language. In addition, you should have the interest in researching an area or designing an artefact, as well as an interest in learning how to carry out academic research.
Sackville Sixth Form offers all students the opportunity to enrol on the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This is studied alongside chosen A level and Btec subjects. The EPQ carries UCAS points and is graded from A*- E. It is widely recognised and highly regarded by universities and in many cases leads to students obtaining lower university offers.
What is the EPQ?
The EPQ aims to bridge the skills gap between school and university. Students study and explore a specialised topic of their choice in depth. The topic can be – but need not be – related to the student’s chosen area of study at university. It can also help students finalise ideas on their future programmes of study at university. The qualification gives students both skills and confidence to research and work independently as well as creatively, and develops invaluable essay planning and writing skills. The final presentation of the project to peers and teachers submission enables students to discuss their work and celebrate their academic achievement.
What are you assessed on?
Students are assessed on different areas of the project, such as processes they go through to plan their final title and the implementation and evaluation of their project. Research and referencing skills are assessed. The end outcome can be a 5000 word essay, a musical or theatrical piece or choreographed dance or an artefact.
Structure of course
EPQ students have a weekly one hour taught lesson in addition to regular meetings with their supervisor. The lessons teach skills designed to develop independent study and the supervisor meetings run like university tutorials and are on a one to one basis, where students are expected to talk through their project ideas and findings, based on their research and develop their ideas.
Universities are very keen to promote the EPQ. We have developed close links with the University of Southampton and receive funded visits from their EPQ specialist who offers whole group talks for EPQ students as well as individual tutorials.
